August Devlog

Hello everyone! The Button City team has been hard at work creating content for the game. We’ve finally settled into our new office and seem to be getting the hang of full time development. For this devlog we want to share some of the fun new stuff we’ve added.

🍋 Mini Games

A big part of Button City is quite small! Er rather, mini! Throughout the game there will be Mini-Games that players go through to progress the story and do as side activities. One of them is running a lemonade stand. We want to make the game non-violent but we couldn’t resist giving Fennel a knife. Luckily though it’s just to slice up some lemons to make a sweet drink for all of his friends. In the mini-game you go between stations to cut up lemons, squeeze them, stir in sugar to make it sweet, then make it rain into cups for customers to enjoy!

There are a few other mini-games in the works too but we want to keep them secret until they are a bit further along.

🌴 New locations

We’re designing some new locations in the game, we can’t show you the full levels yet, but we have some works in progress that we can share. We’ve been experimenting with new types of areas that expand beyond the square diorama levels. Here are some sketches straight from Shandiin's notebook of a park that we’re currently building.

And does this archway lead to some 80’s vapor wave shopping plaza?

⭐️ Switching to Blender 2.80

Blender is the 3D creation software that Shandiin uses to create all of our art for Button City. It’s pretty cool and FREE to use! A few weeks ago Blender officially released version 2.80 and we made the leap and upgraded from 2.79. That may not seem like a big deal based on those numbers… but the new version has some major updates and it’s been a huge deal for the Blender community. For the whole team there was a lot to learn about the new UI and workflow and Shandiin had to adjust our art pipeline for texturing. But despite the work it took for us to upgrade, we absolutely love the new version. If you haven’t used the new Blender yet give it a try! Also Shandiin is going to be working on a tutorial soon about how we create our art with the new version.
